Toby is an old and wise tram engine. He used to work on his own line, but was brought to the Sodor Railway by The Fat Controller after it was closed down. He works with his coach Henrietta at the quarry most of the days. He has had much experience, and will get annoyed by newer engines who misbehave. He is good friends with Mavis, allthough they have had scruples in the past.
